Andy Daniell has already achieved international recognition as an exceptionally talented DJ and producer. As Defected Records youngest ever In the House resident, since joining the label in 2003, he’s been rocking dance floors across the globe.
What is your earliest musical memory?
It’s gotta be listening to my sisters cassette mixtapes in my bedroom, I pretty much soaked up her musical tastes at the time.
What was the first record you ever bought?
I think it was the Source ft Candi Staton on CD single, was for the bootleg version with Frankie Knuckles – Your Love. Might not be my 1st ever record, but its one of the earliest I remember.
Favourite Defected/Strictly track? Why?
I think it’s probably Sandy Rivera ft Haze – Changes. I’m not sure why but it just gets me everytime. A truly stunning record.
Most memorable clubbing experience?
I’m not sure if this is my most memorable moment, but I used to love going clubbing at Zinc in Southend, catching people like CJ Mackintosh, Bobby & Steve, Brian Tappert. It really exposed me to the music that’s become my life.
How has music changed you?
I don’t think music has changed me, I’ve always loved music and I always will. It just happens to have played out that my career is music. Great isn’t it :-)
High point of your career so far?
I think one of my favourite moments of my career is playing all 3 rooms at Ministry Of Sound in 1 night. I did the 1st 2 hours in the bar, and then 3 hours in the baby box and then closed the main room. It wasn’t meant to happen but its a bit special to me that it did. Not bad for 18 years old at the time. Another high point is playing at Pacha, Ibiza. It’s up there as one of the best clubs in the world.
One piece of advice for someone starting out in the industry?
Just do what you do from the heart and make your own luck, and just be yourself. Don’t try and be someone you’re not.
