Dance duo Underworld – Rick Smith and Karl Hyde – will work alongside award-winning film director Danny Boyle to oversee the music for the London Olympics three-hour opening ceremony next July.

Boyle, the opening ceremony’s Artistic Director, described Underworld’s appointment as “the final piece of the jigsaw.” Underworld have associated with Boyle on several occasions previously, including his hit Nineties film Trainspotting to his recent National Theatre staging of Frankenstein.

Underworld’s Hyde commented: “It's a great honour to be asked to do this and one we’re taking very seriously. It's certainly not something we'll get the chance to do again.”

The London Olympics 2012 opening ceremony takes place on July 27 at the newly built Olympic Stadium in Stratford, East London.
