Well-respected London label Soul Jazz Records releases a new compilation next month which focuses exclusively on the UK’s fast-rising ‘funky underground’ movement – a mix of bumpy Brit garage sentiment, dubbed-out bass, Soca, Latin and house-driven afro-beat.
Riddim Box: Excursions In The UK Funky Underground spans two discs and 19 tracks, taking in jams by scene leaders including MJ Cole (Volcano Riddim), Donae’o (African Warrior), and Kode9 (Black Sun). Bugz In The Attic’s Paul ‘Seiji’ Dolby also appears, as do Solid Groove, Altered Natives and Sheffield don Zed Bias.
Commentators have dubbed UK funky as one of the most significant developments within British clubland for several years.
Riddim Box… is released on November 8.
