Sleeping Bag Records and the Traffic Entertainment Group are re-issuing Dinosaur L’s first ever studio project 24-24 Music at the end of this month.
Dinosaur L, headed by disco pioneer Arthur Russell, released 24-24 Music in 1981, a gloriously unfettered, disco-led composition widely discussed because of its rhythmic shifting every 24 bars. The material was actually based on a commission and performance at avant-garde New York art space The Kitchen in 1979, and quickly earned support at legendary Big Apple clubs The Paradise Garage and Studio 54.
24-24 Music’s re-issue (by the Sleeping Bag label Russell set up in 1981) comes in the form of a CD and vinyl box-set, and features much sought after remixes by Walter Gibbons, Larry Levan and Francois K.
Russell died in 1992 but his work as Dinosaur L (including cuts Go Bang and You Can’t Hold Me Down) is viewed as a formative influence on the development of early house music in Chicago. Last year, Lee Curtiss paid tribute to Russell on EP And We All Fall Down with track I Can Hear You Arthur.
24-24 Music is re-issued on October 31.
