Faze Action – In The Trees (Juno)

Headlines
Online record store Juno has been dishing out fine vinyl for ten years (count 'em!), and by way of appropriate celebration, they've decided to crack open the Rolodex and get some of the world's finest producers to give a fresh take on some of their favourite moments in electronica. Faze Action's In The Trees is the first to get treated, with Detroit legend Carl Craig taking the deep house blueprint into orbit. It's not even until half way through that the track becomes even remotely recognizable. But as soon as those evocative strings emerge through the urgent, robotic synths, it sends a shiver down the spine. Jerome Sydenham & Tiger Stripes have a crack too (three in fact), retaining that special bassline and underpinning it with skipping house beats. The 'dark rub' is the pick of the bunch, but Craig's mix outclasses it by quite a long chalk. The 1996 original's included too, of course. (BA)
