Dutch trio Shermanology are a vocal act known for their uplifting combination of live vocals with DJ performance. With a tougher sound than your average vocal house act, the edge is smoothed by the beautiful vocals of brother and sister Andy and Dorothy and cousin Leon, all three of whom have been involved in music for most of their lives (Andy was once the Artful Dodger’s vocalist followiing Craig David's departure, while Dorothy used to tour as part of a Supremes tribute group before her phenomenal voice was discovered by a series of DJs and producers).
As well as producing and writing their own songs, the group are prolific collaborators. With projects including work with artists like Fedde Le Grand , Funkerman , Avicii , Afrojack, their latest track produced alongside The Shapeshifters is ‘Waiting for You’ – perhaps the most uplifting slice of peak-time house music of the year so far. We caught up with Shemanology’s Andy to talk collabs, gigs and studio time…
Is the song ‘Waiting for You’ about anyone in particular?
Myself , Dorothy and Leon wrote the lyrics together, so the song has a individual meaning to all of us.
How did you hook up with the Shapeshifters to make the track?
We've admired The Shapeshifters’ work for years and when we saw that they joined our Dutch bookings agency we hooked up. I got on the phone with Simon Marlin from the group to discuss a future collaboration, we send him some of our demo' and they liked ‘Waiting for You’. We sent them the track so they could flip the song around and find the balance for the first Shapeshifters and Shermanology collaboration.
Were you all in the studio together? Or did you work on in separately?
When we had the basic idea we flew to London and recorded the final vocals. After spending a day in the studio together the track was recorded and a week later we had the final version of waiting for you.
It’s quite a feel-good track…do you think that those positive vibes are a necessary part of house music?
We see feel-good as the factor you need for any song to touch you. It can be either a deep, funky or a more solid sound as long as it feels good! That’s the necessary part of house music.

What does your set-up consist of when you perform live?
We have a very basic setup. As long as there are 3 mics, 3 CDJ 2000s and a DJM800 mixer we are ready to roll.
What was the best gig you played last year? What made it so special?
One of our highlights has to be the Ultra festival in Miami. We performed with Afrojack just after Armin van Buuren. The energy of the crowd was incredible and that’s the dream of every artist. Another one is would be Sensation White in Amsterdam which was simply spectacular.
What are your plans for the rest of the year?
We have a lot of collaborative releases on the way, plus we'll be performing at a lot of festivals this year as well. In the meantime we'll be in the studio working on a lot of new music.
Anything else you’d like to tell us about…?
We want to thank The Shapeshifters for this collaboration. We had a great time making this song and can't wait to see how it translates on the dance floor. And if you want to keep up to date with all things Shermanology, you can always check us out on www.shermanology.com.
