There must be something in the Evian. The French have really made an impact on dance music of late, showing innovation, creativity and ultimately finesse. There seems to be something special about their touch that just captures people’s imaginations. French producers often have the ability to make songs cross musical boundaries effortlessly, a la Daft Punk, Laurent Garnier, Bob Sinclar and more recently David Guetta who have all had huge success causing the rest of the world to sit up and take notice of their sound.
The same could be said of French club culture; there is something about Paris that captures the imagination of the rest of Europe – when there is a hot party going on in the capital we want to know all about it.
‘So, Happy In Paris?’ is that event, the playfully named and highly successful international club night held at the famous Queens club. It is the place that is currently attracting the young, beautiful people of Paris and is spearheaded by the city’s most glamorous DJ and producer Michael Canitrot, a talented, good looking, well connected, ambitious 27 year old. If you are a Paris music-lover and socialite, this really is the place to be.
Michael Canitrot started his career in throwing parties at a young age… “I was 17 when I did my first party at les Bains-Douches, but it was a secret I wasn’t old enough to be inside”. Ten years later the event has grown in the city’s best known party, attended by music lovers, beautiful girls, fashion addicts, artists and people who just want to have fun.
It is from this party that Michael crafted his musical style, a style that lends itself to the catwalks and cocktail parties as well as the dance floor. His style is an eclectic, rhythmic and melodic blend of House, Afros, Latinos, Classics and Disco. He is the resident DJ at Mezzanine De L’Alcazar, the Conran designed restaurant and one of the main social hubs of the city. He is also the sound director of some of the world’s best known fashion labels such as Dior, Cartier, Versace, D&G and Prada, all of whom call upon him to program their powerful catwalk soundtracks.
Michael Canitrot has carefully put all of his experience in designing the sound of his events and fashion shows into his debut compilation ‘So, Happy In Paris? By Michael Canitrot’, a sublime and beautiful eclectic mix set. Each CD is specially compiled and arranged to be played at any social occasion. The first CD is typical of what Michael would play at fashion shows or on the red carpet in Cannes, an eclectic selection of Electronic, Pop, Rock and Deep grooves.
Check out an exclusive promo mix featuring tracks from the compilation here.
The second is a snap-shot of what you might hear if you were to go and see him play at his “So, Happy in Paris?” club nights, a much more upbeat and energetic selection designed to get the dance floor rocking.
In the mix you will find Michael’s own production ‘Desire’, an infectious vocal dance track that is already being played on the dance floors of the world’s clubs. Other big tracks to listen out for are Simian Mobile Disco with Beth Ditto from The Gossip which Michael states “is nothing short of amazing” as well as the latest Rasmus Faber Alf Tumble’s ‘Wilder Side’ with Candi Staton. Elsewhere, the young talent from ‘So Happy in Paris?’ Kaëlig, features with the song ‘3 in The Morning’ and of course ‘Hey Hey’ from Dennis Ferrer …
Michael Canitrot is fresh and new and is an artist that demonstrates that there is an inextricable link between music and fashion. Michael will no doubt represent the sound of the French fashion houses and Paris’s clubbing culture for many years to come.
