Unlike so many of his peers who may visit the White Isle for a few weeks out of a busy summer touring schedule, Tuccillo is one of the few DJs and producers who call Ibiza home. Each year, Ibiza’s commercial appeal grows ever-stronger, with label, promoters and DJs al clamouring to get a piece of the action, and while for many this is a part of the island’s appeal, for Tuccillo, it is more a place that calms, excited and inspires in equal measure.
Regularly found manning the decks at Pacha, Tuccillo is the quintessential warm-up DJ; someone who is more concerned with laying the proper foundations for the super-stars who inevitably follow than making a name for himself with big tunes and banging sets. For the 10th edition of the ‘In Their House’ series, he drops an hour of music exclusively created by himself, demonstrating why his skills as both a DJ and producer are in such high demand.
In Their House #10 - Tuccillo by Defected Records
What’s the Ibiza season been like so far for you?
So far this has been a good year in general, with lots of new releases and really great responses from the labels, DJs and promoters who I’ve been working with. Of course – as ever – a lot of my focus has been on Djing. With my Djing at Pacha, it’s usually my job to warm-up the crowd for the headliners, so always try to be respectful with what I play. Warming up properly is very important to me, and can sometimes be tricky as I have to take into account not only what the crowd wants to hear, but what the following DJs would expect. When I travel to other clubs it’s different; people are there to see me and I can get the screams going and the hands in the air. J
Have there been any notable developments in Ibiza this year?
Yes, I've seen a significant increase in the number of the live acts and concerts being billed across Ibiza. On an island where there is no tradition of live event, this can only be good for us as it really tests the venues and their employees. The demand of hosting these kinds of events improves the sound and the professionalism, so it’s a learning curve for us all.
Summer must be very busy for you, DJing-wise, so do you save the majority of your production for the winter months?
I create permanently. I’m always acquiring new (old) synths and equipment and because I have labels asking for productions pretty much the whole year round, I have to get myself in the studio as regularly as possible. It’s something I love to do, so most of the time it’s a pleasure more than anything else. Perhaps it’s fair to say that it’s the summer when I can test how the productions work on the dancefloor, first to the people in Ibiza and then later across the rest of the world.
How and where was the mix recorded?
This is funny – I have many bits of equipment but not CD decks! I’ve been waiting for them all month but the package never arrived…maybe I’ll have it by tomorrow! They are something I’ve been meaning to buy for a while, but I always end up buying other stuff for production instead. For this I used some software to put the mix together. The time now is 11am and I’ve just finished, having not slept all nights. I hope you like it! J
Are there any tracks in particular that you’d like to tell us about?
Well, all are like sons to me, all are special and I remember very well why I made or what it was that inspired me to do so. It would be hard to pick out any in particular – I love them all and hope you do too.
Are there any album plans in the pipeline?
Yes, but it’s not something I can really talk about at this stage as it’s a bit too early to reveal anything about it. All I’ll say for now is, watch this space! In terms of other productions I can tell you a bit more. My next release will be the ‘Poseidonia EP’ with Willi Graff which is coming on Circus Company. I also have more plans with Freerange and will probably be back with Willie at Drumpoet Community. The truth is that my next intended victim is... Defected , but we’ll have to wait and see with that one!
In your opinion, what would be the one thing that would most improve the music scene in Ibiza?
I think that sometimes because Ibiza is such a huge, international destination, sometimes it’s forgotten that to some people it’s also their home, and not just a commodity to be exploited. Of course it’s a place to come and party, but I think that if everyone paid a little more attention to the Balearic essence of the island it would be better for everyone in the long run.
Anything else you’d like to tell us about..?
Respect the island; take care of her and she will take care of you…
