Saturdays mean one thing, Defected In The House at Pacha! After our mammoth opening party we were looking forward to getting straight back in the mix! This week's headliners Junior Jack & Kid Creme along with MC Shurakano took to the decks alongside King of Tomorrow Sandy Rivera and Defected head honcho Simon Dunmore. The music flowed perfectly throughout the night as Simon Dunmore dropped tunes like the Atjazz remix of ‘Hey Hey’ and ‘The Trumpeter’ by Rae Fox, which is already looking to be the big track of 2011!!
By the time Shurakano announces the arrival of Junior Jack & Kid Creme the dancefloor is absolutely rammed and before long they’re heads down and testing Pacha’s sound system to the absolute limit. Shurakano keeps the energy flowing and Shovell adds a flurry of percussive wizardry before Sandy Rivera takes things a little deeper before building Pacha into a frenzy and dropping Rui da Silva’s classic 'Touch Me'. Oooofff! Another top night and its only the 2nd night of the season!
Then, the next night it's off to one of the island's most popular nights; We Love... at Space.
We Love… has been rocking the walls (and in more recent years, ceilings) of Space for a good few years. The line ups are always big and diverse and tonight does not fail to impress with another whopping line up that includes the likes of Carl Craig, Derrick May, James Zabiela, Hot Chip and Heidi to name a few. I'm particular interested in the Discotecha as Carl Craig's Planet E celebrate 20 years in the business ,and what better way to celebrate than to party like we used to, as tonight it's strictly vinyl only, with not a CDJ in sight! By 12 the room is packed to the rafters as space resident Jem Hayes plays a blinding set of deep, tech-house, building the room nicely before handing over the reins to Detroit legend Derrick May. There really is no greater sound than vinyl being spun on a system as good as Space’s…you can definitely feel the warmth in the room!
After a hierbas or 3 I stumble over to the Terrace to see good pal and new We Love resident Mat Playford. Mat is performing a 3 hour semi-live set on a DJ console that looks like something Captain Kirk used to pose behind on The Enterprise. Mat performs 3 hours of his own productions, adding effects and live keys via a multitude of analogue filters, iPads, a laptop, mixer, 2 CDJs and a voyager keyboard, resulting in more knobs than a pool party at Michael Barrymore's! Mat has the crowd jumping to his disco-tinged productions before building into the hypnotic beats of his and Tim Deluxe’s ‘Back to the Rocket’ which gets a great reaction. (If you want to hear some of his shizzle check his new artist/compilation album that’s about to drop on We Love’s label; I've heard it and it sounds mint!
The good thing about We Love.. is that it has something for everybody. If you not feeling the vast rooms I highly recommend El Salon for some back room vibes and a chance to catch a breath. Tonight, Black Rabbit host the room and are smashing out some seriously good party tunes, from 80's classics by Yazoo through to 90s Balearic cuts from the likes of Primal Scream.
Hierbas is flowing and before long we are in breakdancing mode and busting out some very bad moves. I plan to check the other rooms out, but get lost in the good time vibes of El Salon and don't even realise it's gone 7am and time to put my bruised and battered body to bed!
