Glittering Balls and Percussive Wizardry

Sat 18 April 2009
Defected in the House @ Pacha, Sharm El Sheikh
the Shapeshifters
Shovell on Percussion

Once inside Sharm El Sheikh’s beautiful open air club Pacha, impressed eyes dart all around the space. Glitter balls hang from above alongside dazzling crystal chandeliers, making a twinkling sky of decorations. The club is huge - a maze of caverns and staircases puzzle off the dance floor. Its different levels and various VIP areas peering over the main dance arena is similar to Pacha Ibiza.  This place is really something and almost feels like a mystical haven from the touristy streets outside.

The legendary Shapeshifters come on to a full and boyant dance floor, throwing in tracks such as a funk-heavy mix of ‘House Music All Night Long’ and their unforgettable classic ‘Lola’s Theme’ along with their own latest production, which is a little on the deeper side. These boys are no strangers to pushing the right buttons, and the crowd rejoice accordingly. Shovell is also causing a stir with his finely tweaked percussive wizardry - the sound of drums charges the room, and lifts the music even further.

Alongside the beats, beautiful dancers in elegant costume perform next to acrobatic artists climbing ropes and silk sashes - twisting around over the stage to gasps and cheers from the dance floor. Altogether it’s a truly impressive show here tonight. As we approach morning, the sun is creeping up and the night sky lightens, and this special evening comes to a close.
