Aaron Ross is a name synonymous with quality House music around the globe. The A&R manager for Defected Records and Strictly Rhythm, juggles selecting the hottest tracks for the label with an impressive list of production projects, tour dates and also hosting Defected’s radio show. From roots in pirate radio, launching Soul Heaven Records, to playing alongside and remixing dance music’s biggest names.

He is renound for his inimitable take on House music, drawing inspiration from the old skool and fusing it with contemporary, innovative sounds to make his DJing style unique and fresh. Describing his music style as ‘House- and everything in between’, Aaron toys with a diverse range of sounds and draws inspiration from artists such as Harry Choo Choo Romero, DJ Spen, Jesse Rose and Julian Jabre.

Aaron Ross has come a long way since early beginnings in pirate radio.  His passion for house music in the 90’s quickly took him to a long term residency at institutional London club night, Missdemeanours, playing alongside the likes of house music heroes Lottie, Danny Rampling, David Morales and Erick Morillo.

His early label initiation at Virgin Records at the tender age of 16 gave him an ear for good tracks and saw him go onto head up the promotions for Todd Terry’s Sound Design and In-House Record labels.  Crediting Gilles Peterson and sessions in the studio with long term friend, Phil Asher, as hugely influential in his musical progression, he pushed the electronic envelope, mastered his studio credentials and began producing music of his own.

His first track under the guise of Rain People and featuring Marcus Begg, was released on Osiris music in 2003 and was quickly followed with a string of solid productions under the alias Fanatix alongside Neil Pierce.

His passion and understanding of quality house music lead to regular bookings at club nights such as Shindig, Defected in the House, Soul Heaven and Masters At Work events. Aaron joined the Soul Heaven House dynasty as a resident and found himself doing A&R for Soul Heaven and launching the Soul Heaven record label.

It was in 2002 that he was invited to host his own radio show on BBC1 Xtra, which became an institution for the global house music community. Aaron was the only DJ on digital and UK National Radio pushing a soulful house show at the time. Its popularity gave it room to run for 5 years- a more than impressive lifespan in the dance music industry.

Early 2008 saw Aaron return to the airwaves with Defected’s In The House radio show.  Each week Aaron presents a two hour House music radio show that is syndicated globally. Produced by Wise Budda, who put Pete Tong and Roger Sanchez on the global radio map, the show is syndicated around the world, and often features an elite line-up of guest DJs, such as Todd Terry, Bob Sinclar and Kenny Dope.

Aaron’s current residencies see him regularly rocking The Southport Weekender, Soul Heaven and Defected In The House events.  Global gig bookings take him to the US West Coast where he plays at the legendary Sunday night party 'Deep' at the Vanguard. Aaron recently made his debut at Club Air in Japan, embarked on tours of Brazil and Asia, and frequently appears at arguably the world’s most glamorous club; Pacha, Ibiza at which he cites the best gig of his DJ career to date.

Aaron’s position behind the decks, both live and on-air allows him to road test many of the ground breaking tracks he sources by day. This has provided him with much inspiration for his own productions. To date he holds an extensive list of successful self produced tracks and has acquired the reputation of a sought-after remixer for artists such as Jamiroquai, Blaze, Ultra Nate, Kings of Tomorrow, Dennis Ferrer and Estelle.

His production style is instantly recognisable with a strong mix sound, good lyrics and solid drums, and in 2008 released, to critical acclaim, a full length LP on BBE Records under the Fanatix alias. Other recent projects include working on a series of restless soul EP’s with Phil Asher. He has just signed his new single ‘Time To Shine’ to legendary NY label Nervous Records and has also just finished a follow up to his ‘Westbourne Park Dubs EP’ for Kerri Chandlers Max Trax label.

There is no doubting Aaron has the world as his fingertips. Whether making music, signing a future anthem or working the crowd into a hedonistic frenzy, he does it all with an uncompromisingly Aaron-edged style- one that is sure to leave an aural imprint on the electronic dance music industry for years to come.

Indonesia Blog

The start to my journey in London was stupidly hectic ! I realised when I got up early on the morning of my flight to do a last minute check through of my stuff that I had left a bunch of CD’s and a Portable hardrive at the defected office the night before – I really needed them for my trip – but my flight was at 11.45 am... So.. I’m supposed to check in and 9.45 am right? - so how am I gonna get the shit I left at the office as the office doesn’t officially open until 10am!! - thank the lord for the early birds at defected – I managed to shoot over to the office in barbican from my flat in paddington and get back home grab my bags and get my ass to heathrow.. I got there at 10.30 in an absolute state, sweating and fretting and not in a good way to start a long haul flight!!

But thankfully check in was still open and there was no queue and I was checked in and through security in no time..

Finally touched down in Jakarta, I love it there... I love asia! But jakarta has an amazing energy and I have some great friends there! And I’m there to launch the defected radio show on hard rock fm in indonesia -  a pretty big deal for the show..  So I’m in town a day before the gig... It’s Friday evening and after catching up on some much needed sleep (I can’t sleep on flights!) we head to the hard rock FM studio to do an interview – as me and the super hot Amanda from dragon fly (the club I’m playing at) are waiting to head into the studio to do the interview we’re handed ice cold beers and cigarettes are passed around – nice! Do the interview and talk about the defected radio show, jakarta, halloween and of course the event which is happening the next night at dragon fly..

After that we head for dinner at a restraunt called blowfish owned by the dragon fly crew – amazing food was marred by a story from our asian agent Jonathan who resited a story over dinner about a dish he had eaten in the philippines which is basically a partially formed baby duck – like broken out of it’s shell... And you eat the bones as there still soft !! I know ... Pretty gross dinner talk huh!

Then we headed to dragon fly for drinks – a chance to see the lay of the land before doing my gig there ! After a steady flow of vodka lime sodas I’m pretty damn drunk.. ! My friends who live in jakarta are telling me to come to this other bar where they are - 365 in kemang, a wicked girl DJ friend of mine called Tammy is playing there.. So I head over there at about 4am for more drinks and a good catch up with my jakarta crew... The night ends at 6am with us heading for the the best dim sum in town.. It was amazing and so needed after all the booze!

On Saturday I sleep all day (surprise surprise) - we go for dinner at another one of the dragon fly crew’s restraunts which I can’t remember the name of right now! I had a kobe beef hamburger which was amazing! Then we head to the Defected party at Dragon Fly for the big night!! I’m excited – it’s haloween and the club is totally decked out with some scary décor... The constumes people where wearing were totally awesome.. .from people dressed as teddy bears to genuinely scary outfits with blood and wounds that really looked pretty real... To of course some fine ass witches!!

After the best costume competition winner was announced (it was the teddy bear) I man the decks and play a 3 hour set going in all the different directions of house – which is what I love to do most.. I had been warned it’s notreally a dancing club.. People just hang out and drink, so when I saw people dancing on the tables I was happy! A great night full of fun... Couldn’t have wished for a better launch to the defected in the house radio show on hard rock FM in indonesia...

No rest for the wicked as I was back to the hotel to pack my stuff and catch a morning flight to bali to play at the legendary sunset outdoor venue ku de ta! I’m playing 5-8pm on the Sunday – which is the best night there and 6pm is the best time to be playing as that’s sunset! - I played a non house set, from some mellow hip hop to some classic soul to downtempo chillout jazzy beats and all in between – it truly was a pleasure to be given the chance to play a set of music that wasn’t governed by a 4 to the floor beat... Another amazing gig...  Partied on after my set with a couple of the other DJ’s Wayne and Flix – and we stayed up drinking until 6am on the Monday morning! - if you go to bali – you have to go to ku de ta... It’s where the sun sets and the drinks flow!! Next stop the launch party for defected in the house in seoul ! - watch this space !!!
