What is your earliest musical memory?
My earliest musical memory is my mum's heart beat when I was in her womb. The rhythm of life!
Tell us about your first ever DJ gig/live performance...
My first ever live performance was winning ‘junior tarzan’ at a Butlin’s holiday camp. I was about four years old. Musically it was at a place called Chats Palace in East London. I went to watch my mate’s older brother and his band. The conga player had an fight with the guitarist in the sound check and neither of them showed up for the gig. Myself and my mate Derek Nymbhard got asked to play and we blagged the whole gig. I was fourteen. I bought some congas the next week –I had been saving- and joined the band. My first organised band was a reggae band called ‘691’. I was fifteen and loved it. Jah rastafari!!!!
Who or what inspired you to start a career in music?
I look back now, and I really feel that I was destined for a life in music. I was having so much fun playing music with my friends that I never forced things to happen. Also going to my first gigs at about thirteen or fourteen and watching bands like Ian Dury & The Blockheads, The Specials, Johnny Osbourne, The Clash and Madness was so inspiring. Also, going to Shoom in 88/89, going to Ibiza, and playing at Pacha in 1989. Finally, two people who always supported me and inspire me are my parents.
What do you consider to be your greatest professional achievement?
My greatest professional achievement is being able to follow my dream, and have a life as a professional musician for the past twenty years. Mind you, the first time I did Top of the Pops was very special at the time. Winning Brit Awards, The Mercury Prize and an Ivor Novello as part of M People was also special, as was touring the world with my best mates. Also playing and recording with bands such as Jamaroquai, Soul II Soul, Chicane, The Manic Street Preachers, Primal Scream, The Chemical Brothers…the list goes on bruv!
Any advice for any budding young stars..?
Never give up on your dream. Have fun while doing it. Meet everyone. Get out and about on a scene that you really enjoy. Work at want you want. Spend some time each day - or whenever possible -visualising and concentrating on what you want for the future. Live life!!!!!!
