Audiowhores

What is your earliest musical memory?

Adam:  My Dad has always earned a living as a guitarist, so I grew up in a very musical environment.  There where pianos and guitars kicking about the house for as long as I can remember and I was playing the piano from a very early age.  The first record I ever bought was an interesting choice though; ‘The Ace of Spades’ by Motorhead! Don't ask why!!!

Graham: I played the trumpet in the school band from the age of 11. Before that I remember playing the likes of ‘The Grand Ol’ Duke Of York’  on my Casio keyboard at primary school. Rock ‘n’ Roll indeed!

Tell us about your first ever DJ gig/live performance.

Adam: My first 'proper' DJ gig was on my 17th Birthday.  We'd organised a night for college mates at a club called the Boardwalk in Manchester.  It was a pretty cool club at the time and the place was packed with about 700 through the door.  I only had a small bag of records and a really dodgy pair of headphones but the crowd didn't seem that bothered!!!

Graham: I got into DJing at quite a late stage, the first couple of years of Audiowhores I was just a bedroom DJ, more of a producer. My first time DJing in a club was at a place called the Attic in Manchester for a friends party.

Who or what inspired you to start a career in music?

Adam: Difficult to pin-point one thing specifically but I've always been surrounded by music which I would guess has had an effect.  I got the DJ bug when I was about 13 and I started clubbing when I was 16. My biggest inspiration in relation to house music was, and still is Russ & Craig who ran the Manchester Underground Record shop.  I started buying all my music from them around 1992 and they had a massive influence on my taste, pushing tracks on Strictly Rhythm, MAW, Nervous etc.  They were resident DJs at a great little club called "Out in the Sticks" and I was there every Saturday for years…it's where I met Graham funnily enough!

Graham: It was certainly Russ and Craig from Out in the Sticks that got me into House music.  It’s kinda hard to pin point what inspired me to get into the music, I guess i’ve always been into music from an early age. I wouldn’t say it was my parents as they ain’t musical at all! So god knows!

What do you consider to be your greatest professional achievement?

Adam: Perhaps it's just my personality, but I never seem to be satisfied to be honest!  Regardless of our latest accolade, I'm always looking to better it and take things to the next level.  Having said that, when I look back I am proud of what we've achieved.  Getting your music signed to Defected is probably as good as it gets, so that would be my greatest achievement.

Graham: Certainly getting stuff signed to Soulfuric in our early days and more recently being under the Defected umbrella have been our greatest achievements! From a DJ point of view I think the best ones we’ve had have been in South East Asia. Singapore, Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur were off the hook!

Any advice for budding young stars?

Adam: I'm sure they could teach me a trick or two actually!!  There's nothing I can say which hasn't already been said.  What you put in, is what you get out and so if you want something badly enough and you work hard for it, the opportunity will present itself in time.  How philosophical!

Graham: I’d say network and pimp your ass all over the place. Certainly get speaking to the right people, and exploit facebook/myspace/ichat/msn etc. Quite shameful but it all helps!
